Social Justice Mediation Program Application
The Social Justice Mediation Training is a two-week, 40 hour, training designed and facilitated by certified trainers. This mediation training takes into account power dynamics, the role of identity within conflict, and the importance of taking a social justice lens when approaching conflict. Participants of Social Justice Mediation Training will become a part of the Vital Village Network Mediation Program and accepted members for this cohort will be offered the training cost-free. The Vital Village Social Justice Mediation program is a mediation service seeking to resolve conflicts in our community while addressing underlying issues of race, class, and gender. The mediators seek to hear stories below the line, which may not be heard in mainstream society. Our mediators aim to make each person feel heard and ensure their perspectives are valued. This model is also more explicitly attentive to power differentials than “traditional” or court-style mediation might be. We offer our mediation services free to community members and stakeholders. Upon completion of the Social Justice Mediation Training, graduates receive a certificate and are enrolled automatically in the Social Justice Mediation Program for their Service Learning Pathway. Through the Service Learning Pathway participants use their new skills by completing a 6-month service period, participating in events and activities through Vital Village Networks, attending bi-monthly meetings to practice role play and refine skills, mediating within their communities, developing partnerships, and codesigning and develop tools to enhance the Social Justice Mediation Program at Vital Village Networks.
